Somewhere Over the Rainbow...

I wanted to share this very inspiring quote by Dolly Parton that someone passed along to me today...

"If you want the rainbow, you gotta put up with the rain."

Why we want what we can't have....

I've never understood this concept of wanting what we can't (or don't) have, but I get it...to an extent.

For example, women with curly hair want straight hair and some women/men are always changing their hair color/style.

Are we just never satisfied with what have?

To my dear friends, Mr. & Mrs. Freeman...

On a happier note....

Two wonderful friends of mine are celebrating their 2 year wedding anniversary today.

I am very happy for them.

They are two of the most genuine people I've ever met.

They're kind, honest, sincere and totally head over heels in love with each other.

I admire them.

I hope some day to find a love like theirs.

Congratulations Nick & Amanda!

Girl Code

I love this video of Faith Hill scolding a fan at a concert after the fan grabbed her husband, Tim McGraw.

Don't go messing with a woman's territory.

It's "girl code" ladies.

'A' for Effort

When you're single, you put a lot of effort into yourself and the whole dating scene.

I think women experience the most pressure when dating.

Why?

Because women feel the need to look and be "perfect" in order to attract the right person.

Intelligence. Conversation. Nails. Hair. Skin. Teeth. Body. Wardrobe.

What do guys really worry about on dates?

...their "horizontal" life.

Through friends, observations and my own experiences, that is what I've learned.

Put in what you expect out of the relationship.

* * * * * * * * * * * * * *

Why does it change when you go from being single to a relationship?

Many people believe that when the effort goes out the window, so does the relationship.

Why is that?

People often times put forward a "temporary effort" until they get what they want.

When they feel more comfortable and confident, then they show their true colors.

Why not show your true colors from the beginning?

Why should we worry about our breath being minty fresh first thing in the morning?

...Or what we look like without make-up?

...Or what we're like around friends? family?

...Or how we eat corn-on-the-cob?

All of these small daily life details are often missed and not experienced during the first initial weeks/months of dating.

It's all glitz, glamour, opening doors, dinners out, etc.

I think people should experience the every day life things together.

This is a sure fire way to tell if you're compatible sooner, rather than later.

Who knows?...

You might not like how the other person does their laundry or what type of groceries they buy.

I'm not a dating expert...obviously, but I've learned a lot in my 26 (almost 27) years.

I know there is much more to learn though.

I feel it's important to put in the effort, but only your real honest every day effort.

Be yourself from the start.

The Green-Eyed Monster

Jealousy.

No one likes it.

No one wants to be jealous.

We're human though.

In the past, I would not have considered myself a jealous person.

But...after recent events in my life, I can't help but think negatively.

Negative and doubtful thoughts can sometimes lead to jealousy.

I hate to be that girl. The jealous girl.

I was never like this before.

I was always confident and comfortable with myself.

It's amazing how just one person can have such a big effect on you.

When trust is broken, it takes a toll on your confidence.

Man! I Feel Like A Woman!

Happy Friday everyone!

I'm in a fabulous mood and simply wanted to share this song/video with y'all.

I LOVE it!

Ladies, I hope this kicks your Friday off to a great start. :)

Walk a mile in her heels

Women. They LOVE their heels.

I totally admire Kelly Ripa and her great heel collection!

As I was wearing my hot red heels today, I started to wonder....

Why is it that women wear heels?

People (men especially) ask me this all the time.

For me, I'm short, so high heels are my best friend.

I also like the way my legs look in them (longer!).

Are they comfortable?

Not always. OK...no.

My high heel comfort secret: gel inserts.

I have gel inserts for the balls of my feet in almost every pair of heels I own.

I swear by these things.

Trust me....I wear heels to work pretty much every day.

I also travel for work, so running from appointment to appointment in heels...

Well....I'm a pro.

Kelly Ripa explains how to RUN in heels....

Through rain and snow, I can practically walk anywhere in heels.

Sure. At the end of the day, my feet are killing me, but I wouldn't trade my heels for anything.

My favorites....my red Nine West, Pink (SATC), and black sequins heels.

I don't think I could do one of those high heel races though.

Women get seriously hurt during those things! Ouch!

Check out Kelly Ripa in the High Heel-A-Thon....

The Bachelor: Tenley's Story

Tenley sharing her story about her divorce with Jake tonight on The Bachelor really touched me.

I felt for the girl.

Her husband having an affair and leaving her....

and she's a college admission rep.....

Weird.

I'm glad Jake didn't shun her when she told him about her dissolved marriage.

He's such a great man...the fact that he doesn't consider her as "damaged goods" is refreshing.

I know who I'll be cheering for to win Jake's heart...

I might be a little biased, but gosh....

good women like Tenley deserve a good man...

and only a good man is deserving of a woman like Tenley.

Valentine's Day & Road to Recovery?

I was standing in the store today, waiting in line when I noticed a stand of Chicken Soup for the Soul books. I love them.

The sign on the stand read, "5 Great Books for Valentine's Day"....

One of the 5 books was Chicken Soup For the Soul: Divorce & Recovery.

Wow.

My first Valentine's Day single in 5 years and this is what I have to look forward to?

"Happy Valentine's Day Nikki! I got you this great book."

I couldn't see someone really buying that as a gift for Valentine's Day (but who knows).

So, I bought it for myself (LOL).

Horoscopes and Reasons...

"Your relations will open doors to you and facilitate your social ascension. Your spontaneity and your personality will allow you to put yourself forward. It will be wise not to sign certain papers hastily. Cut off relations with those who don't really interest you and who only think of profiting from you. Persevere in your efforts and you'll lift up mountains."

Wow! That's spot on with my life right now. Weird.

I think the Universe tries to tell us things sometimes.

I believe in signs. I know. That might seem crazy, but I do.

Like the movie, Serendipity. Totally me.

Would I go chasing after a guy in the big city after not seeing him in years? Probably not.

But I love the movie and the whole theme though.

I believe everything happens for a reason.

You meet people for a reason.

You move to places for a reason.

Events in your life happen for a reason.

Cliche, right?

But I'm the girl who believes in happily ever afters and that dreams really do come true.

Butterflies

Butterflies are all I can think about these days.

They are kind of my life mascot right now....if my life had a "mascot". Haha.

They are very symbolic of my life.

A caterpillar changing and emerging into a beautiful butterfly.....

...that's how I'm feeling.

I'm hoping these changes in my life turn into something beautiful.

It was with the introduction of this song that helped redirect my life....

Here's to living more patiently and positively.

Young Wisdom

I had a wonderful conversation today with one of my students.

Who knew a 22 year old could offer so much wisdom?

In learning about my personal situation, this student reached out to me.

He said some very kind and inspiring words that really made me think.

I have such a great support system in my friends, family, co-workers and students.

Through all the cards, messages, phone calls, and hugs...I have been able to stay strong and move forward in my life.

They have all given me something to look forward to again.

From tears to laughter, this student truly touched my soul today.

He said, "Nicole, you're a beautiful woman...you won't be on the market for long. When you see a guy that looks like a hot mess though, sprint in the other direction."

I couldn't help but laugh.

He went on to say....

"You need to completely release him from your life, Nicole. It's then that you will be able to love and trust again. The next lucky is going to have to earn your love and trust...and I mean really earn it. But don't punish the next man for what the past man has done to you."

"Women...when they love...they love hard," he said.

That is so true.

It amazes me that a 22 year old young man can realize this, but some men never do.

If men should know anything about women, it is that they are delicate and extremely passionate about love and the ones they love.

At the end of our conversation today, this student asked me if he could take a moment to pray with me.

This was very unexpected...it really touched my heart.

I am truly blessed and so thankful for all the supportive people I have in my life.

Some of the best advice I've received has been from my students.

I've learned that wisdom has no age.

TGIF

I LOVE Fridays.

What is it about Friday that makes everyone perk up?

Friday =

1. The last day of the work week.

2. The start of the weekend.

3. PAY DAY.

4. Casual day.

5. Date night.

6. Night out with friends.

Because I love music, I often share songs and lyrics to express how I'm feeling.

Here's a fun little Friday song for y'all....

Just want to be happy....

Perfect song for how I'm feeling today....and the video....wow....relatable.

horoscope

So, every once in awhile I like to read my horoscope.

I especially get into it when my life is going through major changes.

It's something about the whole astrological thing that I find comfort, "guidance" and an understanding of what's going on in my life.

I know some people think it's a bunch of crock, but I still enjoy reading it.

Here's my horoscope for today...

The Solar Eclipse has put you in the position of being so good at leading that you can't believe how well you do it and how many people will follow you! Bet your appreciative audience agrees, not to mention the folks who are amazed and astounded at your leadership abilities. Keep going confidently. A Thousand Words Thursday

Cheaper Than Therapy

Here's today's picture....

...my favorite view of Valpo's campus from the Harre Union. I never thought I'd enjoy a winter day as much as I did that day. Snow lightly falling, snow boots, hot chocolate, and good company on a beautiful college campus...priceless.

The Three Musketeers

I've been thinking about my baby brother, Cody, a lot lately....

He leaves for Navy boot camp today.

I'm really sad, but I am so proud of him.

I'm going to miss him and I'm already looking forward to March (his graduation).

I'm a very emotional person when it comes to things like this, especially goodbyes.

It didn't hit me that he was leaving until today.

He's nervous, but so ready to get out of Michigan.

I wish I was going somewhere new too, I told him.

He's looking forward to changing his life.

My twin brothers (Bill & Cody) and I are going through a lot of changes in our lives right now.

Bill just graduated Navy A school down in Florida and will be coming home soon before his next orders.

I am so proud of my brothers.

They are my inspiration and motivation to keep going.

We say this to each other all the time.

Although we are 4 years apart in age, they are my best friends.

I love them.

I can't wait to have us all back together again...

The three musketeers.

Hey Soul Sister....

This song gets me going in the morning and it's such a great way to start my day.

It puts a big smile on my face. I love it.

Hope this gets your day started with a smile on your face.

Albert Einstein, you were so wise....

"Learn from yesterday, live for today, hope for tomorrow."

"The only real valuable thing is intuition."

"In the middle of difficulty lies opportunity." (I love this one)

"Not everything that counts can be counted, and not everything that can be counted counts." (Sign hanging in Einstein's office at Princeton)

Marital Status: check a box...

I recently signed up for a membership at the local YMCA.

As I was filling out the paper work, I came to the marital status part. Check a box...

Single. Married. Separated. Divorced. Widowed.

SO many options now.

When are they going to add "It's complicated" and "Player" to the list? Ha ha!

I asked the lady at the desk....what do I check if I'm this status, but will soon be this status?

She gave me a puzzled/sympathetic look and replied, "you can leave it blank honey".

So, I'm just going to tell people I'm blank or simply nothing when they ask me my status. :)

I have to laugh at the funny/awkward moments through all of this, right?

"Damaged Goods"

Wow. I never realized how much judgment is passed on those who are divorced.

Divorced people are often labeled as "damaged goods".

I don't think I ever viewed anyone as damaged goods, but I admit that I thought differently of them.

Wow. I judged too and didn't even realize it until now. So wrong.

I guess you never know what it's like until you've walked in someone else's shoes.

Thing is, it doesn't matter if you didn't do anything wrong...people will still look at you in a negative light.

Who wants to be with someone who's divorced anyway?

They're going to go in wondering "what's wrong with this person?"...after all, they're damaged goods, right?"

Even if someone doesn't mind that you're divorced, they might worry about others in their life (friends/family) and what they might think about you.

How are you supposed to move on?

I admit, at first I was embarrassed and ashamed to tell anyone what I was going through.

I didn't want to admit failure.

Is that what a divorce means? To some, I've learned, it does.

I have discovered that I am not alone. I hate to be a statistic now, but we all are in some way.

Yes, it is difficult to tell people at times, but I am at peace with it all.

A special person in my life once told me...."God allows do-overs".

So, I am trusting in God's plan for me.

Women, Marriage and Heart Disease?

I discovered this article on MSN.com the other day and wanted to share in my blog. I'm very interested in women's health, fitness and diet. I think it's interesting the connection being made between the stress of marriage and heart disease in women. Check it out...

It's normal to have your share of tiffs with your spouse, but if your relationship with your partner is marked by constant stress and strain, your risk of heart attack increases up to 34 percent, according to a 12-year study of more than 9,000 men and women published in the Archives of Internal Medicine. Researchers found that people who reported chronic conflict in their closest relationship (which, for the majority, was with their spouse) had the highest heart disease risk. The reason: All that anger and stress triggers a flood of hormones that cause the heart to beat faster and pump harder, leading to higher blood pressure and greater wear on cardiac blood vessels. What's more, an unhappy marriage may drive you to heart-harming behaviors such as eating poorly, drinking more or smoking, says Anastasia Georgiades, Ph.D., an assistant research professor in psychiatry and behavioral sciences at Duke University School of Medicine in Durham, N.C.

To avoid a heart attack—not to mention improve your marriage—consider going for counseling, says Georgiades. This is particularly urgent advice if you feel uncomfortable or unsafe speaking up during marital spats: Women who don't speak their mind during these disagreements have four times the risk of dying from any cause (as opposed to old age) compared with those who express their feelings, according to a recent study. So ask your family doctor for a referral to a therapist or find one at therapistlocator.net.

You Make Me Smile

A smile can totally make someone's day.

I love this song.

Listening to it makes me smile (ha ha).

I also LOVE Uncle Kracker's music!

Enjoy! :)

http://www.cmt.com/videos/uncle-kracker/426988/smile.jhtml?id=1111171

Lyrics:

You're better then the best
I'm lucky just to linger in your light
Cooler then the flip side of my pillow, that's right
Completely unaware
Nothing can compare to where you send me,
Lets me know that it's ok, yeah it's ok
And the moments where my good times start to fade

You make me smile like the sun
Fall out of bed, sing like bird
Dizzy in my head, spin like a record
Crazy on a Sunday night
You make me dance like a fool
Forget how to breathe
Shine like gold, buzz like a bee
Just the thought of you can drive me wild
Ohh, you make me smile

Even when you're gone
Somehow you come along
Just like a flower poking the sidewalk crack and just like that
You steal away the rain and just like that

You make me smile like the sun
Fall out of bed, sing like bird
Dizzy in my head, spin like a record
Crazy on a Sunday night
You make me dance like a fool
Forget how to breathe
Shine like gold, buzz like a bee
Just the thought of you can drive me wild
Ohh, you make me smile

Don't know how I lived without you
Cuz everytime that I get around you
I see the best of me inside your eyes
You make me smile
You make me dance like a fool
Forget how to breathe
Shine like gold, buzz like a bee
Just the thought of you can drive me wild

You make me smile like the sun
Fall out of bed, sing like bird
Dizzy in my head, spin like a record
Crazy on a Sunday night
You make me dance like a fool
Forget how to breathe
Shine like gold, buzz like a bee
Just the thought of you can drive me wild
Ohh, you make me smile

Breathing life back into me

It is amazing how a complete stranger can become someone so special in your life.

I am truly thankful for a particular person, for breathing life back into me.

I feel whole. I feel more confident. I feel life again.

"Every breath is a chance to start over," this person told me.

Wow.

Inspiring words.

New year's resolutions are great, but why wait for the new year?

I was reminded that every breath (every day) is a chance to grow, to change, to start over.

A Thousand Word Thursday

Cheaper Than Therapy

I got this idea from another blogger...every Thursday I am going to post one of the many random pictures I've taken. All will have different meaning, emotions and expressions. I think pictures tell a lot about a person.

This picture was my inspiration for this blog. I rang in 2010 with one of my best friends, Danielle.

Passion or smothered?

The episode of Ugly Betty tonight had an interesting topic...couples who spend every minute together.

One person gets annoyed.

Is it because they are feeling smothered or simply not as passionate about the relationship as the other person?

I've been there.

It can be difficult to know the difference.

Every relationship starts off all lovey-dovey and everything seems picture perfect.

I've learned that relationships are about endurance.

My grandparents have been married for 50 years! Now that's endurance.

No one is looking to be smothered.

It's passion.

No matter what form the passion, everyone wants it.

Cougar Town

I LOVE the TV show, Cougar Town!

Courtney Cox is one of my favorite actresses and I just like the concept of the show. It makes me laugh out loud.

Tonight's show started off with the difference between men and women in the dating world.

Is dating easier for men or women? I vote men.

In the show, the guys voted women.

Why?

"Women are the gatekeepers of sex....women decide if and when it will happen."

HA! So true!

A bet was made that a man wouldn't turn down sex from a woman.

Courtney Cox's character called a random guy and ask if he'd have sex with her.....and....he said YES!

Is that true? Men will sleep with any woman who offers?

I'm glad to be the "gatekeeper" in this situation.

No wonder why men try so hard.

It's the disgusting horndog guys that make dating annoying.

Ugh! Dating.

That's another post.

New year, new me...

I am hoping that 2010 will bring me much love, adventure and happiness. With a smile on my face and a pep in my step, I am focusing on me and my future...for the first time in a long time.

With every new year brings new year's resolutions. Most people center their resolutions around weight loss, exercise and short term goals. Mine are a little more about making lifelong changes. Here's a glimpse...

1. Focus on me.
2. Look forward, not backward.
3. Make the most of every day.
4. Embrace change.
5. Be more adventurous.
6. Try new things.
7. Go on more vacations - even mini ones.
8. Be more patient.
9. Don't sweat the small stuff.
10. Simply, have more fun.

Encouraging words from strong women...

If you're like me....sometimes I need some words of encouragement when I'm feeling down or just want some positivity in my life. A good quote can go along way. Here are a few I found this morning to start my day off right...

"Think like a queen. A queen is not afraid to fail. Failure is another steppingstone to greatness." - Oprah Winfrey

"Learn to get in touch with the silence within yourself and know that everything in this life has a purpose." - Elisabeth Kubler-Ross

"Nobody can go back and start a new beginning, but anyone can start today and make a new ending." - Maria Robinson

"Find out who you are and do it on purpose." - Dolly Parton

"I really don't think life is about the I-could-have-beens. Life is only about the I-tried-to-do, I don't mind the failure, but I can't imagine that I'd forgive myself if I didn't try." - Nikki Giovanni

"You never find yourself until you face the truth." Pearl Bailey

No one wants to say the "D" word in a marriage...

Divorce. It's not something I ever thought I'd say I'm going through, but I unfortunately I am. No one plans to get divorced when they say "I do."

My wedding day was like a fairytale. The day was absolutely perfect. I can't say the same about my marriage. 5 years together and married for less than a year and a half when divorce papers were filed.

Whether a divorce occurs because someone has simply fallen out of love, you've grown apart, infidelity, abuse or addiction, it is never easy no matter what the cause. It is heart breaking, at least it was for me.

Questions swarmed around in my head....what did I do wrong? was I not a good wife? did I not love him enough? was I not beautiful enough? smart enough? what was wrong with me?

Why is it that we automatically blame ourselves in cases like this?

So, what is my plan now? Who goes into a marriage with a Plan B? I didn't. I thought I was going to live my happily ever after. It's back to reality for me.

In order to move forward, I learned that grieving is natural and necessary. For some this might be longer than others. There is no set time limit. I grieved and grieved hard and long for a few months until I found myself not crying every day and then not at all.

Writing for me is therapeutic and I hope others find comfort in reading about my experience and life after divorce. I'm sure there will be good days, bad days, funny stories, and adventures along the way. I am looking forward to starting over...starting fresh...learning about myself and what life has to offer.
